The program

The Master in Digital Journalism is designed to introduce students to the world of contemporary newsrooms, providing them with professional training in reporting and editing functions across all new media.

It places a strong emphasis on the new relationships between journalism and digital media, leveraging the renowned experience of IE Business School in this field. Our students will become innovative journalists, contemplating new communication fields with profound knowledge about the XXIst century media industry, acting as entrepreneurial professionals.

As part of its practical and professional approach, the Master in Digital Journalism will focus on the development of intellectual, creative and managerial skills, with strong foundations on ethics and critical thinking, training journalists who are able to deal with complexity and with a deep knowledge of the contemporary world, and equipped with the unavoidable technological background to develop a successful career in a radically altered communication landscape.

The program encompasses a groundbreaking profile based on a unique combination of factors:

  • MediaLab. With its own digital writing, editing and control rooms, our MediaLab will be the genuine space where students will work on gathering information, reporting and broadcasting news.
  • Faculty´s academic excellence with hands-on approach to teaching through case studies, newsroom training and freelance work coaching.
  • Six specialized areas to choose the final field project in journalism.
  • Strong focus on the Entrepreneurial side of the journalistic profession, training graduates to create and manage new business models of news reporting and/or act successfully as freelance journalists or communication consultants.
  • An in-depth look at the rapid evolution of Journalism shaped by the emergence of new media and its implications in news generation, editing and delivery.
  • International & multicultural student intake. IE’s diversity is strongly reflected in the international and multi-cultural student intake. The IE Community represents over 40.000 Alumni in more than 100 countries.
  • Speaker Series. Throughout the year, students will attend a series of conferences by renowned professionals within the field of communication.
  • IE´s international recognition as one of the top 10 business schools in the world, according to international journals such as Financial Times, The Economist or The Wall Street Journal. IE School of Communication is also a member of Euprera and Global Alliance, two global leaders in promoting the exchange of innovative communication practices.

By the end of the program, students will be knowledgeable on new and current approaches to digital journalism, new business models and contemporary media. This encompasses learning how to work on writing and reporting for new digital media, developing multimedia journalistic projects and creating original approaches to strategy and production processes. The strong entrepreneurial focus of the program will enable them to create their own business or to bring innovation into media companies.

Structure

The Master in Digital Journalism is an intensive, ten-month program divided into three periods that run from October to December, January to March and April to July. Students will be attending all course content units at our IE campus in Madrid, with a number of MediaLab sessions at our campus in Segovia.

The program comprises 4 core units and a final project which cover the following areas:

The Master in Digital Journalism welcomes graduates with backgrounds from different disciplines such as Economics, Business, Journalism, Media, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, as well as Communication, Marketing and History.


Your Program

IE´s Master in Digital Journalism will comprise a multi-cultural, diverse and talented group of students, capable of bringing strong momentum to the learning process.

During de program you will:

- Have access to the MediaLab, our state of the art radio, television, editing and digital newsroom).

- Address audiences through oral and written chronicles, reports, interviews and columns.

- Choose from one of seven areas of specialization:

    - Economics and Business Journalism

    - Sports Journalism

    - Political Journalism

    - Scientific Journalism

    - Cultural Journalism

    - Innovative Journalism

    - Trends and Technology Journalism

All tracks will enjoy a hands-on format: Experienced journalists will coach your work in the chosen area. This work will lead to the preparation of the final project.

How to Apply

We seek dynamic, motivated, creative candidates with excellent academic and professional backgrounds who also offer the kind of interpersonal skills that will benefit the program.

Admission is granted on a rolling basis and although early application is recommended, there is no deadline for applications for a particular intake. Admission is valid for two years.

Requirements

To be considered for admission, a candidate must have successfully completed the following prior to submission:

- Bachelor degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university

- One-page CV

- Two letters of recommendation

- Official university transcripts (certified translation into English or Spanish)

- English language certificate (Cambridge Proficiency, TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS,EOI) for non-native English speakers. Not required for those having completed an undergraduate degree in English

- Photocopy of current passport

- One passport-size photo

- Duly completed application form, including all supporting documents

- Optional submission of portfolio sample work

- Application fee 120€ (non-refundable and payable by credit card or cash)

Our rigorous selection process is geared towards selecting those candidates that demonstrate the highest potential. The process is divided into three steps:

- Submission of application form and documents

- Personal interview

- Final decision

The admissions process is a rolling process and as such there is no deadline for application for a particular intake.

Course Fees

Candidates pay a non-refundable application fee of 120€ to cover administrative costs.

The tuition fees for the Master in Digital Journalism for the October 2011 intake total 19,200€, including a 1,200€ contribution to the IE Foundation.

Admission is valid for two years, allowing the successful applicant up to two years to reserve a place on an intake, thus allowing students to plan their experience. To reserve a place on the Master in Digital Journalism, intake students are required to make a deposit of 4.000€ + the contribution to the IE Foundation (1,200€).
